Submission from Mapache, a member of the Contra Todo Collective in San Antonio
One important thing has been stolen from the lives of the Chicanx and Latinx people for hundreds of years. From the time colonists arrived and pushed the indigenous peoples out of what is now SouthWest America, to the American takeover of Mexico where those who fought at the Alamo became martyrs of the invasion, and now in the continuation of violence against the people of this land in the form of I.C.E. and detention; there is one thing the brave people of this continent have fought for: justice.
Now, as part of that struggle, we invite you to our vigil, where we will mourn and remember those who we have lost to the violence of the border. On July 17th, 6:30 PM, meet at Lady Bird Johnson Park. From there we will have a short march to the ICE facility on Crosspoint street-where countless migrants are shackled and shipped off on busses–then, do not leave until they receive justice. Demand it for those incarcerated. Demand it for those who have died. Now is the time for the racist, colonial, violence against us to stop. Not the next election. Not until the wardens are ready. Not until more of us have died crossing the border. Join the vigil, bring a candle, a picture of a lost one, a family member who has been separated, our own martyrs, and sit with them outside the detention center until they receive what is deserved: Justice.
“We are nothing if we walk alone; we are everything when we walk together in step with other dignified feet.” – Subcomandante Galeano
