in observance of SmashXSmashWest
SXSW is a force of hypergentrification in so-called austin, especially in the Eastside. Companies hoard space just for their SXSW events, the cops sweep unhoused peoples camps, landlords and developers displace Black and Brown families to make room for AirBnBs, and most of us feel like we can barely recognize—much less feel at home in—our own neighborhood anymore. To fight this isolation, and both materially and spiritually strengthen our community against gentrification, Cimarrón is raising funds to open a Rec Center and put down longterm roots in the Eastside. It’ll be a place where we host y’all (anybody who’s with the mission) to teach each other everything we know, share our art, dance and move together, build skills and resources for autonomy, and form rich relationships with each other and the land.
We’re debuting this effort with a rave in the last type of free space we can still find in this city (exact location tba), as part of SmashXSmashWest
