These events are a continuation of our Fair Pay at SXSW campaign, first launched in 2023. After our initial wave of protests, the festival agreed to give artists their first pay raises in over a decade, increasing rates from $250 to $350 for bands, and from $100 to $150 for solo artists. Simultaneously, SXSW also raised the rates at the inaugural SXSW Australia from $0 to $350AUD for bands, and $150AUD for solo artists. These pay raises are a victory, and a demonstration of what we can win when artists organize. But these meager increases are not remotely sufficient, particularly without any other adjustment to how the festival mistreats artists. We will keep our campaign running until Penske Media and SXSW meet our very reasonable demands for $750 AND a wristband for all artists, the removal of the application fee, and equitable compensation for international artists. We will be paying all bands on our unofficial showcase the same $750 we are demanding from SXSW.
